How Many Classes Can You Miss? Pakistan University Attendance Rules (2026)
One of the most common questions from Pakistani university students: "How many classes can I skip without failing?" The answer varies by university — and getting it wrong can get you barred from finals.
Attendance Rules by University
| University | Minimum Attendance | What Happens If You Fall Below |
|---|---|---|
| NUST | 75% | Debarred from final exam (DX grade) |
| FAST-NUCES | 80% | Grade penalty or debarment from finals |
| UET Lahore | 75% | Cannot sit for final exam |
| COMSATS (CUI) | 80% | Debarred from finals (course fail) |
| Punjab University (PU) | 75% | May be prevented from exams |
| PIEAS | 75% | Strict enforcement — no exceptions |
| GIKI | 80% | DX (debarred) — must repeat course |
| Bahria University | 80% | Debarred from final exam |
| Air University | 75% | Academic warning then debarment |
| NED University | 75% | Cannot appear in exam |
The Formula: How to Calculate Your Bunk Budget
Safe classes you can miss = Total classes conducted × (1 - Minimum %)
Example at NUST (75% policy):
- 30 total classes conducted
- Minimum to attend: 30 × 0.75 = 22.5 → 23 classes (always round up)
- Classes you can miss: 30 - 23 = 7 classes
Example at FAST (80% policy):
- 30 total classes conducted
- Minimum to attend: 30 × 0.80 = 24 classes
- Classes you can miss: 30 - 24 = 6 classes
What is a DX Grade?
DX stands for "Debarred from Examination." It means:
- You cannot sit for the final exam
- You automatically receive 0 in the final (or the course is failed outright)
- At NUST and GIKI, DX appears on your transcript
- You must re-take the course next semester
Subject-by-Subject Tracking
The biggest mistake students make is tracking attendance for the whole day rather than per subject. You might attend 80% of classes overall but fall below 75% in one specific course — and still get debarred from that final.
Always track per subject. Our Attendance Tracker lets you add all your subjects with individual attendance policies and tells you exactly how many more classes you can afford to miss — or need to attend — in each one.
Pro Tips
- Never cut the last few classes of the semester. Professors often take roll specifically in the last 2-3 weeks to finalize attendance records.
- Medical leaves. Many universities (NUST, FAST) count medical leaves differently — check your department's specific policy.
- Attendance and finals performance. Students with 90%+ attendance consistently outperform those at exactly 75% — partly because you absorb more content, and partly because professors know your face.
